SOLID HOOKS IN TEMPERED STEEL by VIJ5

For the Solid Hooks, Max Lipsey started to work in his own workshop purely on intuition, by manually forcing and reshaping an industrially produced copper plumbing tube. The results reminded him of the classic and functional Shakers wooden pegs. This link to past forms and manual work he then translated into larger scale production techniques with an eye on future possibilities of computer controlled processes.

These hooks bring the beauty of ste out from behind the walls!

Tempering steel is used to increase the elasticity and plasticity of the material. The Solid Hooks have been very unscientifically tempered: not to improve elasticity of the steel, but to make pretty colours!

Tempering is done by heating steel to a certain temperature, then allowing it to cool in still air. The exact temperature and the specific composition of the alloy determines the colour of the finished product. As steel is heated past 200 °C, it goes through a wild transformation of colours, becoming a rather precise thermometer, the colour representing the high temperature mark. Through this, the colour palette of the Solid Hooks varies per piece and comes from the steel itself.
