‘5FRANC’ BROOCHE by SOPHIE LACHAERT & LUC D’HANIS

Brooches made from recycled old money (Belgian Francs) are an item from the “Changed Values”collection by Lachaert & D’Hanis
In the 20 years that they’ve been working together, Sofie Lachaert and Luc d’Hanis have created an oeuvre involving objects, furniture, and installations that graciously and joyfully balance between art, craft, and design; between the conceptual and the poetic. It therefore doesn’t fit in just one box. Nothing is what is seems at first glance, so we’d better look twice.
Their work typically contains multiple layers of meaning – like a mountain of graphite diamonds, which as such forms a collection of beautiful objects, but also takes us back to the recent past and the museum’s regional coal mining history, while at once leading us into the worrying blood-diamonds trade of our time, as well. A pile of books with a candlestick is not just beautiful to look at, but also refers to the memento mori and vanitas symbolism in 17thcentury paintings. Two chairs that happen to have their back legs entangled evoke a relationship between two people. “One doesn’t see the entwining at first glance, but take one chair away and the other will totter”, say the artists whose life and work are inextricably interwoven, and for whom each project is a symbiosis.
